eLearning for Tablets
Tablets are now one of the main portable devices that people use in their day to day lives. Just like a phone, tablets bring the advantage of portability and flexibility as you can access the internet and your apps from anywhere with an internet connection.
As a result of this there is a good chance your learners will also want to take eLearning and digital training on their tablet as well. The ability to take eLearning while on the subway or at home in their living room is a big benefit for learners.
When designing your eLearning it is important to make sure your content is tablet-friendly so that your learners will enjoy their learning experience and your content will look good on a variety of devices.
Below are some tips on how you can design and develop tablet-friendly eLearning for your learners.
1. Large Buttons
When taking eLearning on a tablet navigation is very different, instead of using a mouse to point and click learners interact with the screen by tapping on it, this means that they do not have the precision you get with a mouse and keyboard. As a result of this it is important to make sure your navigation elements are big and clearly visible, using larger fonts/buttons for next, previous and menu items will mean that your learner will easily be able to navigate between pages and not get stuck.
2. Offline Content
Making eLearning offline and available for download is a huge benefit for learners that use tablets. Often a learner will be using the tablet on-the-go and this means they may have limited or no access to an internet connection. By making your eLearning available for download allows your learners to take training anywhere even if they don’t have an internet connection. This means that learners would be able to continue their learning uninterrupted, for example they may begin an eLearning in the office and continue to take it on the subway during their journey home.
3. Technology Limitations
Due to a tablets portability one of the things it sacrifices is computing power, when compared to a laptop or PC a tablet often has less computing power and storage space. This is something to keep in mind when designing your eLearning for tablets, if your course has a lot of high definition video or a lot of large images it may be difficult for your learners to download. One of the things you can do to reduce any slow down of performance is to reduce the quality of large media elements, this will make the file size smaller and make it easier for learners to access, as the screen is much smaller than on a laptop or PC this reduction in quality will not be as noticeable for the learner.
