Microlearning - What and Why
Wikipedia defines Micro-learning as a "holistic approach for skill based learning / education which deals with relatively small learning units." It involves short-term-focused strategies especially designed for skill based understanding / learning / education. Micro-learning refers to micro-perspectives of learning, education, training and skill development.
Microlearning cannot be put as smaller chunks of bigger trainings you deliver through your LMS. But it is focused content delivered in short bursts, typically 1 - 5 minutes in duration. It uses spaced learning and spaced retrieval techniques to help embed knowledge in long-term memory.
Microlearning adapts continuously to an individual’s training needs based on their current level of knowledge in a given domain. It is well suited to both long-term knowledge retention and performance improvement. The learners are in control of what and when they’re learning.
A huge chunk of the microlearning implementing population use video as their mode of eLearning. 70% of millenials and their businesses prefer video over other mediums, however, other interactive or non-interactive modes of such eLearning are also widely accepted.
Learners want to get straight to the point. If you choose video as your medium of choice, a good rule of thumb to follow is 120 words for every minute of video.
