Making the Learning Stick
Whatever you are training for, or how you are doing it, it’s key to sustain what your learners have learned. Here are some key points to consider when trying to keep training alive:
Personal motivation – training should help employees solve issues that they have to deal with on a daily basis. Make sure you give them the opportunity to use their new skills in the first few weeks so they can experience some early wins.
Refreshers – job aids, elearning or classroom based training can help as well, people always benefit from deliberate practice.
Social Motivation – hold learners accountable for using the crucial skills they’ve learned and when the new skills will make the greatest difference.
Rewards/Recognition – make sure your reward system is aligned with the use of the new skills
You can try one of these or even better, all at the same time. Using a combination of these is your best bet!
